If there’s one thing I urge couples to invest in for their wedding, it’s hiring a wedding photographer. Although there are many options out there with varying styles, prices, and portfolios, it’s important to choose one that resonates most with you and what you like.

Basic Information

Before booking your wedding photographer, it’s important to know a few things.

1. What style do you like? Light and airy, dark and moody, bright and classic. A great way to do this is to look at the photographer’s portfolio on their website and also on their Instagram!
2. Budget. I recommend researching and getting quotes to see what the average is. A lot of brides tend to be surprised how much photographers can be. However, remember having quality photos that you love are 100% worth the investment. There would be nothing worse than getting your photos back from a photographer you went with just because of your budget and hating every single one.
3. Read Reviews. See what real couples had to say!

The Process

First I suggest deciding on the style you like and your ideal budget as I mentioned above. Next I would visit websites and Instagrams of all of the photographers you’re considering. Then, reach out for availability and quotes. Once you’ve made your decision, you’ll sign your contract, send your deposit and consider yourself booked!

Timeline

Photographers tend to book up VERY quickly. Because of this, I suggest booking early — possibly even one of the first things you book. A timeline for this is tough, but I would say booking at least a year in advance gives you a better chance of getting the photographer you want.

Tips + Tricks

Schedule engagement session with your photographer once you book them. This gives you a feel for their style. If you aren’t happy with how your engagement photos turn out then you probably wont be happy with your wedding photos and may need to consider someone new.

When looking through portfolios, look through full wedding galleries. Do they capture the details you want? Is the emotion you want portrayed coming through their photos? These are great questions to ask yourself!

Questions + Things to Consider

Experience. While longer doesn’t always mean better, photographers with more experience more than likely have learned to refine how they take photos and know how to keep the day running smoothly.

Consider your venue. Has your photographer worked there before? If it’s a darker space are they able to compliment that with their photography style.

How long will it take to receive your photos afterwards? While some brides really want their photos as soon as possible, remember that getting them faster doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll turn out better.

Photo rights. This is something that will more than likely be detailed out in your contract. But make sure you know what you’re entitled to in terms of getting your photos printed and being able to share.

Ask them their backup plan in case they are sick or have an emergency the day of your wedding day. Good photographers will be able to answer this with more than “I’ve never missed a wedding” or “I won’t get sick.”
