How did you meet?
Devan was starting her senior at Texas Tech University. During her schooling she held a job with Tech’s Honor’s College as a Freshman Mentor. When coming back for her last round of mentoring, she was told she was going to be paired with a new mentor, Nathan von Roeder.
Nathan was hired a little later in the year because a different mentor had dropped the program. This meant that he had missed all of the job training the spring before. Therefore, the program leader specifically wanted to place with Nathan with one of her more experienced mentors, Devan. The program leader specifically told Devan that she placed Nathan with her because she thought their personalities would work well together. If only she understood how much! Let’s just say after mentoring their class together, the rest is history!
How did he propose?
Nathan + Devan were long distance and therefore, most of their relationship was composed of long phone calls and long drives followed by short visits. It was January 2019 and Devan had just made a long drive to Lubbock, TX from Dallas (5 hours). She was exhausted but was very happy to see him. Nathan had asked if they could go hiking at Palo Duro Canyon (2ndlargest canyon in North America and happens to be right outside of Amarillo, TX). Devan wasn’t surprised by this at all because they both enjoy doing outdoor activities, especially things like hiking. However, she wasn’t excited about the fact it was January and cold outside. Also, she had no clue why he wanted to get up at the crack of dawn and get there by 8am to start the hike.
All this being said, she didn’t question it because he seemed excited and really wanted to go. So, Devan just decided to put away all of her hesitations and just be down to go. Good thing she did because it turned out to be her proposal! They hiked the most popular trail, The Lighthouse. Right before they made it to the top, he pulled her (and their dog Midas who made the trip because Devan absolutely insisted – aka she didn’t know the proposal was happening lol) over to an intimate viewing of the canyon. They sat huddle together super cold and did a bible study together.
Nathan picked the study and it went over God’s creation of man and woman. How man was unfit without the woman and how they’re supposed to be a perfect representation of God and his people. The beauty that there is in marriage and what it represents. After that, he set up a tripod to capture the moment and then got down on one knee. It was the most perfect proposal Devan could have ever imagined.
Where are you going on your honeymoon?
We have booked a trip to Cozumel! They are both so excited! Devan especially, because she’s never had the opportunity to be out of the country before.
