If you’ve been following my blog, then you know I’m a HUGE fan of the DJ’s of It’s Your Night! Today, I’m introducing one of my favorites, Jeremiah Brinkley! He’s sharing more about the business and advice for all couples on the search for their perfect wedding entertainment!
Tell us a bit about your background/career path.
I grew up in a musicians home so my whole life has revolved around music. Everything I have ever done has been involved with music of some sort. I’ve been singing on stage since I was 5 and started in the wedding industry when I was 18. Started working with a company in the DFW area and learned everything I know! After 2 years it was time to move on. I came to It’s Your Night Entertainment and I have been here ever since! Now I am a DL/Live Musician full time for 7-8 years!
What do you love about working with couples to create their music?
I love that literally we create a custom playlist for their night. It 100% unique to their personalities and what kind of music they like, but this is kind of like their love story. Music that makes them who they are and who they are together. A Custom Love Story playlist that they will remember forever!
What’s your advice for brides on a budget?
Budget is everything in the wedding industry and I say, find the one thing that is most important to you and allot most of your budget to that! If you want beautiful decor, budget more for flowers/decor/venue. If you want a HUGE party and want everyone (including yourself) to have the night of your life, budget more for your DJ. A DJ can make or break a party so if having a party is important to you, make sure you budget more money to find a good one!
How can a bride find a DJ who is a good fit for them, & what’s the number one question brides should ask a DJ before hiring them?
I truly believe you can know whether or not you are a good fit with someone by the first meeting you have with them! MEET YOUR DJ PEOPLE! You need to make sure that you guys mesh well together! Everyone is different, so my answer really is to meet DJs until you find the one that you know for sure is right for you! (It’s kind of like dating y’all LOL) The number one question you need to ask your DJ is what their DJ style is and how they react to people not dancing. That can tell you right there if they are the person for you! Like I said earlier, everyone has a different personality and if that doesn’t align with who you are or what is most important to you, then they aren’t the right fit and THAT IS OK! 🙂
What is the biggest piece of advice you’d give a bride as she selects her DJ?
My biggest piece of advice for brides is knowing that DJing is SO MUCH MORE than just pressing buttons. GOOD DJs are the ones who know how to read a crowd, how to mix music, what music works well together, how to beat mix, knows multiple genres of music, knows what songs are the best to dance to, etc. Most everything comes from the first thing though…how to read a crowd. If your DJ doesn’t know how to read a crowd (like when people are tired of a genre, tired of a song, physically tired, or are REALLY feeling it, etc.) then they aren’t going to work well to keep a party going. You just need to know that a Good DJ is not one who just has an Itunes Playlist and presses play. It is so much more. So look for the DJ who is not just a button pusher but a REAL DJ.
What is your favorite style of music.
I am ALL OVER THE MAP! I love everything, but if I were to narrow it down, I would say 90s Hip-Hop/early 2000s Pop/Hip-Hop. Love these genres to work with only because I grew up listening to all of it.
How extensive is your music library or song list?
I have like 15,000-20,000 songs in my library reaching everywhere from oldies to newbies. From Country, Hip-Hop, Tejano, Bachata, Salsa, EDM, etc. I have literally EVERYTHING! LOL
What do you do to motivate a crowd if nobody is dancing?
My cliche answer would be Line Dances, but honestly sometimes those don’t even work. I honestly would say (for me) I will play every genre known to man until I find the one that the crowd wants to dance to! Trust me, I have gone from Garth Brooks to Lil Jon just to get people fired up! I also won’t continue to play a song if it doesn’t work. If something clears the dance floor or doesn’t bring any one onto the dance floor, then I will change it pretty quick to make sure that they get out there and have a good time! 🙂
Should brides submit a do not play list?
ABSOLUTELY! Please send us this! The last thing we want to do is to play a song that you don’t like and have you get annoyed or frustrated! We want you to have the time of your life, so send us songs that you don’t like! Send us Artists and even genres you don’t like! We want to make your wedding day perfect and this is one of the best tools we can use to make sure you leave with the biggest smiles! 🙂
What equipment do you bring on wedding day?
I have a typical DJ mixer set up that runs from my Macbook Pro! A BOSE PA system for the dance floor sound, as well as wireless QSC zone speakers to move around the room/outside to spread out the sound are items I bring! I also bring dance floor color wash lights to give dancing more of a party atmosphere. If I am doing Live Music I bring my Piano and Guitar to play during cocktail hour and dinner (and even your ceremony/first dances if you want). I also have wireless mics for people to use for toasts and welcomes!
Tell me how the booking process works and the timeline after!
So after our first initial meeting, when you guys are ready to book, we send you a contract and deposit link. We also send you a link to our online planning tools that you can use to help you plan what songs to use, etc. About a month out to your wedding day, we will have a final planning meeting to go over the final details as well as write up a timeline for your day (matching your planners but with all the little music things that I need). There we can talk about the flow of the evening as well as the vibe you are going for! I will send you the timeline so that if there are any changes we need to make, we can make them! About a week out I will send an email to all of your vendors to introduce myself as well as gather their social media information! 🙂 Then we have the wedding! 🙂
