Tell us a bit about your background/career path.
I grew up in the kitchen with my mom and grandmas. They were always baking something delicious! That is where I got my start. Eventually in college I needed a creative outlet so I began teaching myself how to decorate cakes. It was a welcomed treat in our house and I loved getting to share my passion with others! When my husband and I got married I decided to be brave (or incredibly foolish) and make my own wedding cake. After that, I couldn’t get enough! I now create cakes for weddings, birthdays, and just because it’s Tuesday! It’s never a bad time for cake!
Can you provide an overview of what to expect during this process and timeline?
Typically brides book their wedding cake about 6-9 months in advance. First we get an idea of the style cake they are wanting, then move on to the flavor options! This is the fun part. The couple and I -and sometimes their planner- sit down and get to try out some yummy flavor combinations and find the perfect flavor for their special day!
What is the biggest piece of advice you’d give a bride in her selection process?
Don’t stress too much! Obviously you want everything about your big day to be perfect, and it is our goal as wedding vendors to make that a reality for you, but keep the end goal in mind. If everything goes wrong- the caterer’s are late, your dress gets ripped, your groomsmen forget their suits, but you end the day married to the man of your dreams, that is the most important thing!
If you know that you are marrying the right person, who is committed to live life loving and growing with you, everything else just falls into place! As much as I love weddings, (and trust me I do! I would marry my husband over and over if it meant I got to plan another wedding) focus on the marriage that the wedding is supposed to be celebrating!
What do you love about working with brides to create their wedding cake/desserts?
Weddings are such a fun event. When else will you get to party with all of your friends and family as you pledge your undying love for your soulmate?! I love getting to create a cake that helps make that that day even more special! Each detail of their big day helps tell a story of the couple and I love getting to help tell that story- through cake!
What elements can you incorporate that brides usually don’t know or don’t think of?
It’s all in the details! Whether that is a monogram to match the invitation suite, adding a little flair to the design that makes it just perfect, or trying a non-traditional cake flavor are all fun ways to incorporate their style in the cake design!
Do you recommend keeping the top tier or no? Why?
It is totally and completely up to you! I personally did not save the top tier of my wedding cake. Frankly I didn’t want to sacrifice the freezer space! I wanted all the room for my homemade ice cream! If you do decide to keep the top tier you need to make sure it is well wrapped. Wrap it in plastic wrap twice, then in tin foil, and finally place it into a Ziploc bag to make sure everything is nice and sealed.
